Haunted Places

The Catacombs of Paris

Paris Catacombs

Deep under the streets of Paris is a dark and silent world—the Catacombs. It’s a huge maze of tunnels filled with the bones of over six million people, carefully stacked along the walls. Back in the 1700s, Paris had a problem: the graveyards were too full, so they moved thousands of remains underground. What was meant to be a solution turned into something much creepier. People say the tunnels are cursed. There are stories of ghosts, strange voices, and explorers who went in—and never came back out. Visitors have reported flickering lights, cold air, and the feeling that someone is watching them.

Over time, the Catacombs became a popular place for brave visitors and ghost hunters. But not all of the tunnels are open to the public. Deep below are secret areas that are off-limits, with miles of dark paths no one fully knows. Some people, called cataphiles, sneak in through hidden entrances to explore. They say it's easy to get lost, and some have been trapped down there for days. Others talk about strange drawings on the walls, creepy noises, and the feeling that something is following them. The deeper you go, the scarier it gets. And some say the Catacombs don’t just hold the dead… they keep them.

Suicide Forest

Aokigahara Forest Japan

Also called the “Suicide Forest,” is a dark and quiet forest at the bottom of Mount Fuji in Japan it’s one of the most frequent suicide sites in the world. For centuries, the forest has been associated with death. People have come here feeling sad and lost and the forest has become known for tragic deaths. In ancient times, families struggling with poverty would reportedly abandon elderly relatives here. Some say it’s haunted by ghosts who can’t move on, and many believe the forest has a strange heavy feeling that never goes away. It’s one of the scariest and most mysterious places in the world. Today volunteers regularly sweep the woods for signs of people in distress, and signs posted at trail entrances urge visitors to think of their families and seek help

Even though there are warnings, people still go into the forest—some out of curiosity, others for sadder reasons. Inside, the trees are thick and block out most of the light, making it feel dark and quiet. People say it’s easy to get lost because compasses and phones stop working. Some tie ribbons or leave small items to find their way back, but not everyone does. Sometimes, search teams find backpacks, tents, or other personal items left behind, showing someone was there but never came out. There are stories of people hearing soft voices or footsteps behind them, but when they turn around no one is there. Some say the forest plays tricks on your mind, making you feel lost or scared.

Pripyat

Pripyat is a city in Ukraine that was once full of life. It was built for workers at the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant. But in 1986, after the plant exploded, everyone had to leave in a hurry because of dangerous radiation. People left everything behind homes, schools, toys, even food on the table. Today, the city is a ghost town. Buildings are falling apart, trees are growing through cracks in the streets, and silence fills the air. Some visitors say it feels like time just stopped. Others believe it’s haunted, not just by spirits, but by the memories of what happened. People have reported hearing strange noises and seeing shadows in empty buildings. Pripyat is a place frozen in fear, sadness, and silence.

Island of the Dolls

Creepy dolls hanging on trees

Hidden deep in the canals of Xochimilco, near Mexico City, is a tiny island that looks like something out of a nightmare. Everywhere you look, there are dolls—old, decaying, missing eyes or limbs—hanging from trees, fences, and even nailed to walls. Legend says the island’s caretaker, Don Julián Santana, found a young girl who had drowned nearby. Not long after, he discovered a doll floating in the water and hung it up to honor her spirit. But he didn’t stop there. For decades, he collected dolls from the trash, from the canals, from anywhere he could find them, believing they would protect the girl’s soul. He lived there alone with his growing collection until he was found dead… in the same spot where he said the girl drowned.

A lot of the dolls on the island are old, dirty, and broken. Some have spiderwebs on them, and others move when the wind blows, making creepy sounds. Even during the day, the island feels strange and quiet. At night people say it’s even scarier. Some visitors say they hear footsteps or soft voices in the trees. Many people bring their own dolls and hang them up, hoping to calm the girl's spirit. Even though it's just a small island, many say the feeling there is hard to explain like the dolls are watching you.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary prison halls

Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia was once one of the most famous prisons in the world. It opened in 1829 and was designed to keep prisoners completely alone, so they could think about what they’d done. But instead of helping them, this isolation often drove them mad. Over time, the prison became overcrowded and more brutal. People were locked in cold, dark cells for years, and some were treated cruelly. The prison finally shut down in 1971, but many believe the spirits of former inmates still remain.
